Tue, 30 Nov 2010 09:18:00 -0800 Paris in late November http://tomposterous.posterous.com/paris-in-late-november http://tomposterous.posterous.com/paris-in-late-november

By four in the afternoon evening was not far off, and a few lights were already shining in the windows when we visited the Rodin Museum.  The park and the statuary around the museum villa were magical at that time of day.  Giant plane trees leaves were scattered along the walkways, and a few roses were still in bloom.  On the other side of the high garden fence, the dome of the nearby Hôtel des Invalides shone in the last light of the afternoon.

I found this easy technique for converting color photos to black and white in the Photoshop Elements blog.

  • Set foreground and background colors to the default black and white.
  • Select Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map.
  • Select the Layer Blend Mode drop down arrow and select Color.

My son told me that a few days ago he was out mowing his lawn and less than twenty-four hours later was shoveling snow.  As many times as we experience these abrupt changes in the weather in Minnesota, we still marvel at them.  Having something to marvel at is not so bad.

World
When I was a kid in Chicago in the Fifties, there was a television program on every Friday night, a travelogue called "The World is Yours."  The host was Maurice D. Copland.  Now here's the hitch: I can't verify it on the Internet.  Do you think I imagined the whole thing?

Mon, 01 Nov 2010 08:52:00 -0700 Rally to Restore Sanity http://tomposterous.posterous.com/rally-to-restore-sanity http://tomposterous.posterous.com/rally-to-restore-sanity
I was inspired by the "go to hellman" report on the Rally to Restore Sanity.  Details like these are a breath of fresh air.
On the train, collective coping behaviors emerged from the unexpected mass intimacy. When we got to stations where one or two riders needed to get off, other riders squeezed aside to make sure they could emerge from the train. Later, above ground, the crowd would make a special effort to part for rallygoers in wheelchairs and parents with children in strollers. Police cars and ambulances drove through streets packed with people because somehow the crowd recognized a necessity.

Thu, 28 Oct 2010 06:29:24 -0700 Hedonic Adaptation http://tomposterous.posterous.com/hedonic-adaptation http://tomposterous.posterous.com/hedonic-adaptation

Fascinating psychological concept. Once you get used to pleasant changes in your life, they no longer give you the same rush of pleasure they did at first. I've known that for a long time but have just now seen named what is apparently a common experience.

Simple antidote to hedonic adaptation: gratitude.

Wed, 20 Oct 2010 17:48:00 -0700 The Company I Keep http://tomposterous.posterous.com/the-company-i-keep http://tomposterous.posterous.com/the-company-i-keep

I just finished reading Philipp Meyer's American Rust, and I've been thinking about the reasons I read fiction. What I believe I can identify as my primary motivation is the company I get to keep for some hours, fascinating characters I only meet between the covers of a book or in a recording. In American Rust I especially enjoyed the long internal dialogues in the heads of the main characters in which they considered a question or an issue and then answered or even contradicted themselves. It's the way I work out most problems myself, so it was interesting to "meet" others who, shall we say, talk to themselves.

Sun, 17 Oct 2010 05:42:00 -0700 A Birthday and Stair-Step Days! http://tomposterous.posterous.com/stair-step-days http://tomposterous.posterous.com/stair-step-days

Ark

Today we're celebrating our oldest granddaughter's birthday.  Grandpa Bernt and I are are giving her a Sevi Balance toy:

All together on the ark!   Tutti sull'arca!   Alle Tiere auf die Arche!   Tout le monde sur l'arche!   ¡Todos al arca!

Between July 12 and September 6 next year our four granddaughters will be 0, 1, 2, and 3 years old.  In 2011 and every year thereafter we'll celebrate stair-step days.

That’s six pieces of information (name, title, organization, phone, twitter and skype) on two lines. The vertical lines do a little separating, and the bold makes it pop. Moreover, it’s a simple, efficient dose of information that doesn’t overwhelm anyone. And you still have, I would argue, one more line to use if you do need to add things like a fax number or something.
